Stryker T-Tops Frequently Asked Questions

Stryker T-Tops
Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions? Find your answers below!

Q: Will it fit my specific boat's year, make and model?

A: Measure the width of your center console... if it's 50 inches or less, the SG600 t-top will fit. All Stryker T-Top are adjustable making them a one-size-fits-all solution. Simply move the prefabricated left and right upright sections in or out to the desired location. After you complete the installation process by clamping in the top section, mounting to the floor and using the provided stand-offs that mount to the sides fo the center console, you will have an extremely sturdy and strong OEM quality t-top with no wiggle, sway, creaks or squeeks. Also, note that the floor of your boat needs to be flat on the sides of the center console for the legs to be mounted to the deck properly. If the base of your center console steps or curves out, factor those extra inches into the overall footprint and total width. Realistically, not many center console units are anywhere near 50" and our t-tops generally fit 99% of boats made in the past 50 years.

Q: What diameter tubing do you use for the t-tops?
A: All our t-tops are made of premium 2 inch diameter(not 1.9" or 1.5" like our competitors) T6-6061 high tensile aircraft aluminum with a high performance marine-grade anodized finish(full anodizing bath on completed sections after they are fabricated and welded) to seal everything with the best protection against corrosion and to withstand the harshest environments.
Q: Your installation video mentions that Lanocote be used on bolts during assembly. What is Lancote and where can I buy it?
A: Lanocote is a paste that inhibits all types of corrosion and prevents thread seizure in marine hardware and machinery. You can purchase it from www.westmarine.com (direct link).
Q: How do I know if there is enough structure under the floor boards to bolt this to?
A: Most center console boats are constructed with extra materials on either side on the console. You should experience no problems with installing a Stryker T-Top on your center console boat.
Q: What type of material is used for the canopy top?

A: We use Sunbrella™ Plus marine-grade fabric for all our canvas tops. Sunbrella™ is pretty much the undisputed best option for the marine industry. Just about every single boat you see in your local marina is dressed up with Sunbrella™ canopies, biminis, covers, seating, etc. Fade-resistant Sunbrella™ fabrics protect against salt water and all kinds of weather. They breathe so it doesn't trap heat and moisture like vinyl, which can mildew. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends Sunbrella™ as an aid in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin. A properly cared for Sunbrella™ t-top canopy will out-live a competitor's marine canvas by as much as 10 times.

Every t-top purchased includes a Sunbrella™ marine canvas. You can choose from one of ten standard colors or special order a custom color from any currently offered by Sunbrella™.

Q: Does the Stryker T-Top include standoffs to mount the t-top to the center console?
A: Yes. The Stryker T-Top ships with 2 beefy aluminum stand-offs that can be cut to match the exact dimensions and placement of your center console. Installation with the standoffs is very important as they substantially increase lateral support for your t-top. For those of you who have local waters that can get choppy or have a t-top loaded with accessories making it a little more top-heavy, you might consider our T-Top V-Brace Stabilizer Kit for the ultimate in making your t-top solid as a rock.
Q: Can I pull wakeboarders, tubes or other watersports from the T-Top?
A: Absolutely not! Stryker T-Tops, and all other types of center console tops, are NOT designed for watersports including wakeboarding, waterskiiing, wakesurfing, and tubing. Failure to comply may result in injury to the rider and/or damage to the T-top.
Q: What do you recommend for cleaning and maintaining my anodized aluminum t-top and accessories?

A: First, the easier regular care should be to rinse of the entire surface with CLEAN and fresh water followed by wiping down with a clean micro fiber of soft cotton cloth especially after a day out on the water. Never use abrasive cleaning pads or gritty cleansers. The main culprit to a degraded anodized aluminum finish is contamination from the water and atmospheric solution. Regular cleaning will go a long way to extending many years to the life and good looks of your t-top. Anodizing is a "hard" finish. It's an electrochemical process in which an oxide (anodic) layer is chemically built on the surface of the metal. Treat the anodzing with respect and it will reward you by keeping your aluminum looking new for a very long time.

It is also a good idea to periodically use mild soapy warm water with a clean water rinse and wipe-down after. There are many product out there made specifically to be safe for anodized aluminum(just make sure you research first and test it on a small hidden spot before applying to the whole thing). We recommend the Woody Wax CPR system for use on Stryker T-Tops and other accessories with anodized aluminum, aluminum, stainless, and chrome finishes. More that just a cleaner, Woody Wax provides additional protection against water spots, corrosion, and oxidation for up to 6 months, providing lasting protection, sealing in corrosion blockers, creating incredible depth and shine.

Care & Maintenance of Anodized Aluminum
Anodized aluminum is the clear winner when it comes to providing a very durable, long lasting, protective and lustrous finish for aluminum products- perfect for the marine industry. Properly maintained, an anodized finish can easily last a decade or more.

Anodizing is a safe process that is not harmful to human health. An anodized finish is chemically stable, will not decompose, is non-toxic and is heat-resistant to the melting point of aluminium.

What threatens an anodized finish?
The short answer is the environment. A build up of grime which carries contaminated moisture will gradually attack the finished surface. Eventually, it will ruin the finish. Proper regular maintenance will remove harmful contaminants before the damage is done.

How to clean and protect anodized aluminum?
First, it is important to determine the condition of the surface and how long it has been since the last cleaning.

If regularly maintained, you can wash down anodized aluminium with a mild soapy solution or with warm water containing a suitable wetting agent. Because anodizing creates a hard finish, mild abrasives or an abrasive cleaning sponge is sometimes recommended. More difficult grime deposits may also require the use of a mild abrasive.

Note: If mild abrasives are required, please consult a professional. It is highly recommended that you test the use of any cleaning solutions or mediums in a small inconspicious area before treating the entire surface. Be sure you perform your cleaning out of direct sunlight and have allowed the metal surface to cool. Be sure to follow the instructions located on the back of cleaning solutions.

Do not use harsh acidic or alkaline cleaners because they may destroy the finish. Use solvents with care as they may stain the finish. Remember to be thorough and clean all surfaces, corners and nooks. Also, thoroughly rinse with water after cleaning especially where crevices are present to ensure removal of all residues. If improperly rinsed, residual cleaning agents can lead to etching or discoloration.

What NOT to use?
The removal of grime should NOT be attempted by the use of emery paper, sand paper, steel wool or other highly abrasive materials.

Acid or alkaline cleaners are not recommended as they can damage the Anodized coating.

Emulsion cleaners or proprietary chemical agents may also attack the Anodized coating therefore they should never be used except in consultation with companies specializing in the cleaning of Anodized aluminium.

How often should I clean anodized aluminum?
Many factors like your location, local climate, constant exposure to a marine environment, fresh, salty or brackish humidity or water splashing, or direct exposure to the sun, UV and heat should be considered. Typically, cleaning should be carried out every month to every six months. The best preventative maintenance schedule will lean to more frequent mild cleanings using the appropriate method instead of less frequent harsh cleanings. Again, the aim of the cleaning operation should be the removal of grime deposited and contaminants BEFORE damage to Anodized coating occurs.

Q: What do you recommend for cleaning and maintaining my powder coated t-top and accessories?

A: Powder coating is a type of coating that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The main difference between a conventional liquid paint and a powder coating is that the powder coating does not require a solvent to keep the binder and filler parts in a liquid suspension form. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin". Because powder coating does not have a liquid carrier, it can produce thicker coatings than conventional liquid coatings.

Although it may have a similar feel to your car's paint job, it's important to note that taking care of it is not the same. Also, it's important to point out that powder coated finishes do not have a clear coat like on automobiles. Please read below for more specifics on cleaning.

Care & Maintenance of Powder Coated Paint

Cleaning Solutions:
The best method of cleaning is by regular washing of the coating using a solution of warm water and mild detergent. All surfaces should be cleaned using a soft cloth or sponge, using nothing harsher than natural bristle brushes. If the atmospheric pollution has resulted in heavy soiling of the coating, then nothing harsher than white spirit should be used for cleaning.

General Cleaning Tips:
• Over-cleaning or excessive rubbing can do more harm than good.
• Strong solvents or strong cleaner concentrations can cause damage to painted surfaces.
• Avoid abrasive cleaners. Do not use household cleaners that contain abrasives on painted surfaces.
• Abrasive materials such as steal wool, abrasive brushes etc, can wear and harm finishes.
• When using recommended solutions avoid drips and splashes. Remove run downs as quickly as possible.
• Avoid temperature extremes. Heat accelerates chemical reactions and may evaporate water from solution. Extremely low temperature may give poor cleaning effects. Cleaning under adverse conditions may result in streaking or staining. Ideally, cleaning should be done in shade at moderate temperature.
• Do not substitute a heavy duty cleaner for a frequently used mild cleaner.
• Do not scour painted surfaces.
• Never use paints removers, aggressive alkaline, acid or abrasive cleaners. Do not use trisodium phosphate or highly alkaline or highly acid cleaners. Always do a test surface.
• Follow manufacturers recommendations for mixing and diluting any recommended cleaners.
• Never mix recommended cleaners.
• To prevent marring, make sure cleaning sponges, cloth, etc, are grit-free.

Special Notes:
If unsure what cleaning product(s), pads or application medium to use, please consult a professional.
